Not his car but will work for asking the question.

Kinja'd!!!

Water is collecting on the bottom of the inside of both rear passenger doors right behind the b pillar. All door and window seals appear to be intact but if left in the rain enough it will spill over from sill into the footwell. While it is garage kept at his house it is not at school so hence his question. He showed me today after work when he opened the door and a “small” amount of water landed on the parking lot.

Feel free to ask questions or for pictures of his car and said pool of water if we can recreate it easily.

Sunroof drains are the likeliest culprit.

Almost always sunroof drains, they can get crimped where they drain under the car and flood the back seat. best way to check is to open the sunroof, then carefully pour some water in the channel around the sunroof and see if the water ends up on the floor of the back seat, or under the car where its supposed to go.

That was my guess.

The exact same thing happened in my b5 Audi A4. No sunroof, so in my case it was that the underhood drains next to the hood hinge were clogged with leaves and gunk. Might not be the same on the M5, but worth a look.

The moisture barriers behind the door panels can be problematic, particularly if they’ve been apart for a window regulator and not resealed to the door properly. Sunroof drains are also common, and the sunroof seals become weak over time which allows the drains to be overwhelmed, but I’d hope that’s not the case because the E39 has an electrical buss under the passenger floor that’s susceptible to flooding.
